Cayo Piedras del Norte is an amazing marine park located 15 kilometers from the city of Varadero. The best way to get there is to take one of the boats departing regularly from the Playa de las Calaveras Beach. It only takes an an hour to cover the 5 kilometers which separate the park from the beach.

It is a wonderful place to practice all kinds of aquatic activities, from diving to a wondrous bath with dolphins.

On the other hand, if you wish to admire the wide variety of tropical marine fauna offered by the area without having to go under water, you can choose a boat tour with a crystal bottom which will allow you to see the coral, colourful fish and other marine jewels without getting wet.

A good alternative to contemplating the beauties of the sea is a calm cavalcade close to the park’s beaches, one of the few in the island that still hosts part of the native and wild vegetation of the North of Cuba.

Although the Faro Cayo Piedras del Norte Lighthouse is an excellent recommendation for experiencing the culture, the true treasure of the marine park is located underneath its waters.

In the 1990s, a missive launcher boat, a yacht, an AN-24 plane and a trailer boat were purposely placed underwater at a depth close to 30 m, with the aim of attracting scuba divers and people interested in studying this type of phenomenon.

There are signs showing the designated diving areas to ensure the safety of divers, and can be found on a nautical map.

This unique park is the only one of its kind on the island, which makes it a very special place, and one quite different to its surroundings.

At the moment, plans are being made to submerge tanks, armoured cars, helicopters and other vehicles at a lesser depth, which will allow divers to practice freediving.
