Cárdenas, Cuba

Don’t miss out on the chance to visit Cárdenas, the perfect example of a colonial city in Cuba

San Juan de Dios de Cárdenas, a little city belonging to the municipality of the same name is located just 20 km from Varadero, Cuba. A visit here is highly recommended after a visit to the latter, since there is a very strong contrast between the two and, therefore, they are unforgettable.

Cárdenas is as traditional as Varadero is modern, as simple as the other is glamorous.

Cárdenas seems to have escaped the records of Isabel Allende. It preserves traditional values and the essence of the Cuba before the Castro regime.

The city is beautiful, with dribs and drabs Colonial buildings and 19th century arches splashed across the city. Its ruins preserve the untouchable magic of an impalpable age, which surrounds the place like fog.

The hotel and service workers in Varadero have their homes here, in this little city, where the legend of the Revolution has always been present.

In 1850, Venezuelan Narciso López, accompanied by a group of North Americans, hoisted the national flag of Cuba for the first time, and locked horns with the Spaniards. However, the skirmish only lasted a day.

Years later, a student with revolutionary ideas, Antonio Echeverría, planned and attempted to assassinate president Fulgencio Batista in 1957. He could not succeed however, dying by a gunshot wound. One of Cárdenas’ three most important museums bears his name.

Cárdenas is known by its long history of revolutionary fights in which it took part, from the wars of independence to the Batista Government. Many young native men enrolled in the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra Range to try to overthrow it.

Despite its size, Cárdenas has an intriguing cultural offer in the city’s center, the Echeverría Park.

The Casa Natal de José Antonio Echeverría Birth House Museum, the Oscar María de Rojas Museum and the Batalla de Ideas Museum are the three most important museums in Cárdenas.

It also hosts a well-furnished Culture House and a fascinating theater, among other cultural institutions.

Cárdenas has the merit of having been the first American city to erect a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus in the center of the city.
