The Parque Nacional de Viñales (Viñales National Park, also known as Viñales Valley, is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Cuba.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, it is a valley with sky-high pines, limestone rock mounds, which are especially enticing for those who love climbing, and numerous tobacco plantations located within the Sierra de los Órganos Mountain Range.

Some million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period, this area contained underground rivers that eroded the limestone bedrock, making huge caves. The caves eventually collapsed, leaving only the characteristic eroded walls, which can still be seen today. This is the best example of all the karst valleys on the island; here you’ll also find the Santo Tomás Great Cave, the biggest cavern system in the whole country.

The park is a protected area, although it is possible to stay there thanks the many hotels and wonderful private houses.
