Live the tranquility of Las Terrazas, a completely ecological natural environment located in the Sierra del Rosario, Cuba

Las Terrazas is a small rural tourist community of sustainable development that offers you a unique environment in connecting with nature. Located 75 kilometers west of Havana, this place is part of the Sierra del Rosario, cataloged by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 1985.

The Las Terrazas project arose at the end of the sixties with the purpose of recovering an area that had been destroyed by the intensive cultivation of coffee in the 19th century, so much so that, in an area of 5000 hectares, millions of trees were planted, terraces were dug for cultivation and a small town was built following guidelines that respect nature.

Although the interesting ruins of the old coffee plantations can still be seen here and there, their coffee past is today history, as this environment has been reborn as a natural paradise in which the land is not exploited, but rather cared for, and respecting its cycles in complete harmony with nature.

The ideals of this ecovillage have attracted a striking community of artists whose workshops and studios are open to the public and deserve to be visited but, without a doubt, what most draws the attention of Las Terrazas is its lush natural environment, which will allow you to enjoy endless outdoor activities.

At the peak of Cuban coffee, the area was home to a total of fifty-four coffee farms, of which twelve ruins can now be seen. The most interesting are the Cafetal Buenavista (Buenavista Coffee Plantation), the Hacienda Unión and the ruins of San Pedro and Santa Catalina.

To understand the contemporary cultural scene in Cuba, you should not miss a visit to the Galería de Lester Campa (Lester Campa Gallery), an internationally renowned painter whose works are inspired by the landscape of Las Terrazas. The Museo Peña de Polo Montañez (Peña de Polo Montañez Museum), a small house on the banks of the San Juan River, will allow you to get to know first-hand the life and work of this famous Cuban singer-songwriter.
