Ernest Hemingway’s Museum is housed in Finca Vigía where the great american writer lived, it is located on a hill in San Francisco de Paula, a quiet neighbourhood of the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, in the province of Havana.

The writer rented this house in 1939, and a year later bought it and lived in it continuously until he returned to the US in 1960. Here, Hemingway wrote a large part of the works “For Whom the Bells Tolls”, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream”.

The house is preserved as the writer left it. Hemingway donated it together with his trophies and its contents to the Cuban people, therefore, the house has been the incentive for some rare shows of cooperation between the US and Cuba. In 2002, a US-funded project digitized the documents stored in the basement and in May 2006, 11000 Hemingway’s private documents were sent to the JFK Presidential Library of the United States for their further digitization.

Although the interior of the house is closed to the public, it can be viewed through windows and doors. Inside, you will find books everywhere, a phonograph and a record collection. When visiting the museum, don’t hesitate in taking a stroll through its garden to see the pet cemetery, Hemingway’s fishing boat and the pool where Eva Gardner bathed naked.

How to get there:

To reach San Francisco de Paula you can take the Metrobus, line P-7 (Cotorro), which starts at the National Capitol in Havana Center and get off at San Miguel del Padrón.
