Located at one side of the well-known Plaza del Himno Square, the church was erected in Bayamo around 1516 and has resisted many historical events perpetrated in the city, especially the 1869 fire.

Labelled as cathedral in the 20th century, beside it is located the welcoming Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Chapel, built in 1720. The Iglesia de San Salvador Church is erected as one of the first funded in the country.

This religious building has a Colonial style, made on its inside by an only nave and a bell tower with three bodies. The nave has a central gallery and two sided ones. On the left side is located the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Chapel, the Parish House, the building of the Catechism, the Library and various services such as reception, secretary’s office, etc.

The Chapel has a beautiful Baroque altar laminated in gold and a precious wooden roof, of cedar, which follows the Mudejar style.

During the famous fire of 1869, there were destroyed the main nave and the Major chapel, while the Nuestra Señora Chapel remained intact. Consequently, the church was inactive for almost 50 years, until between 1916 and 1919 when took place the first main intervention for its reconstruction. In fact, the structure counts with five fundamental restorations from the age which covers between 1916 and 2005. In the last occasion, the restoration focused especially in the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Chapel and the mural painting dominating the Major altars as well as those all over the church.

One of the most important traditions in the city is closely related to the Cathedral. Each year, there is a procession of the Virgen de los Dolores which begins its tour in this welcoming church.

Do not miss the chance of visiting one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the province of Granma and one of the oldest churches in the country.
