This huge square was made by the French Jean Claude Forestier in the 1920s, which was known as Plaza Cívica Square until 1959. The square was built over a hill in the style of the l´Etoile Square of París, with several avenues spreading to Almendares river, Vedado, and Fraternidad Park of Centro Habana. On its huge terrace have been used for several conferences from the Party, and has been a witness of several events related to solidarity to brother nations, and of anniversaries of historical events, like the assault to Cuartel Moncada, and the success of the Revolution.

Nowadays is surrounded by grey buildings and is the headquarters of the Cuban Government, used as a place to celebrate the important political meetings.

In the center of the square is the José Martí Memorial, and right behind are the Government offices, inside the heavily guarded Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party.

The concrete building in the north of the square is the Ministry of Interior, famous for the huge mural of Che Guevara on its facade, which is a copy of the picture taken by Alberto Korda in 1960. Right down the picture of Che is the sentence “Always until the Victory!”. The nearby building is the one of telecommunications, showing the picture of the heroic fighter Camilo Cienfuegos.

In the east side of the square is the José Martí National Library, housing an interesting photography exhibition; and in the west side is the Cuban National Theater.
