Located on the Sierra Maestra Range, the Comandancia General de La Plata High Command was declared National Monument in 1978 by the National Commission of Monuments.
In this place, Fidel Castro decided to settle in in 1958 the Command because of the need of setting up a fixed place for the hospital and the Rebel Radio after months of activity without a base of operations. From there, there were planned all the missions of the guerrilla and the messages for the Cuban people were sent out.
To avoid being located from the air, all the buildings were built without levelling the field and without cutting down the trees, which gives it that mountain aspect and that charm so liked by the ecologic tourism lover. This, the thick forest could camouflage successfully every sign of the presence of the rebels on it. You can still see the 16 simple buildings strategically set up in forest clearings hidden by the thick and tall branches.
The hospital was located a quite far, down the hill, by a separated road so the wounded could not reveal the true location of the camp.
The tour is completed with the little museum located at the beginning of the complex where you can learn about the life in the enclosure through pictures and maps. You can see the house of Fidel with one of its seven prepared escaped routs in case his location was discovered and the path can be followed until you arrive to the place from where the Rebel Radio broadcasted.
In the Comandancia General de La Playa High Command, was signed the First Law of the Land Reform on the 17th May 1959 and were given the first title deeds of the range to the farmers. It is not easy to arrive, but with the proper footwear and clothes, water and a tour guide, the experience becomes unique.
